This research line focuses on behavioral and psychosocial aspects of physical activity, nutrition, and obesity/weight control, in intervention and population studies in adults. Key research topics include correlates, moderators, and mediators of i) behavior and behavior change, ii) weight loss and weight maintenance, or iii) positive psychological outcomes in obesity/weight control. Another research focus is the use of Self-Determination Theory to understand and influence motivational and self-regulatory aspects of weight control behaviors, especially physical activity, through effective interventions.

Current Research Topics
  • Predictors of success in  weight loss and weight loss maintenance

    • Psychological predictors (moderators, mediators) of successful weight control

    • Exercise / physical activity and exercise motivation as predictors of weight loss and maintenance

    • The National (Portuguese) Weight Control Registry: characteristics of successful weight loss maintainers

  • Self-determination theory, self-motivation, and health behavior change

    • Using self-determination theory to promote autonomous self-regulation of exercise, eating behavior, and weight control

    • Self-determination theory-based mediators of exercise/physical activity and eating behavior

    • The role of self-determination in body image, psychological health, and subjective well-being in overweight and obese persons

  • Interactions among physical activity, eating behavior, body image, and body weight

    • The association of physical activity with eating self-regulation during weight management and in the population

    • The impact of body image and subjective well-being on body weight control, physical activity/exercise, eating and exercise self-regulation

  • Other topics of interest:

    • Using Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) to study health behavior change

    • Measuring exercise / physical activity in overweight and obese persons

    • Ethical issues in obesity treatment and prevention
